Bursaries for theological training
The Anglican Foundation of Canada administers the bursary program on behalf of the Anglican Church of Canada. A number of trust funds, some held by the Anglican Foundation and some by General Synod, contribute to the funds available each year.
Two trust funds were established by the Anglican Foundation:
- The Anglican General Bursary Trust is for theological students studying toward ordination who will be attending a theological college in Canada (bursaries are not given for undergraduate study). It is funded from the Oonah Bishop Fund, the Jean Grant Foundation, Anglican General Bursary Fund and designated bequests from the Woods, Owen, Paterson and the Bishop Marsh funds.
- The Anglican Graduate Award Trust is for advanced theological study at the post-graduate level with a view to a teaching and research career in a Canadian Anglican theological school. Applicants are required to have already completed a university degree (B.A. or equivalent) and a professional degree (M.Div. or equivalent) and be ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada. Bursaries are not given for Doctor of Ministry degrees.
The Catholic Apostolic Universal Trust Fund also designates funds each year to each of the above trusts.
The advisory committee responsible for the consideration of bursary applications meets in early May. The deadline for submitting applications to the Anglican Foundation of Canada office is April 1st each year. Applicants are advised of the results in June and the funds are distributed in September to the student through the theological college at which the student is enrolled.
These trusts need financial support in order that sufficient funding may be available in future years. To support this work, donations may be made to the Anglican Foundation of Canada and designated to the Anglican General Bursary Trust or the Anglican Graduate Award Trust.
