Lewis S. Garnsworthy Memorial Trust

Throughout his ministry in the Diocese of Toronto, Archbishop Lewis Garnsworthy believed that excellence in preaching and pastoral care was essential to the vitality of the church. He knew, too, that achieving excellence in these two critical areas of ministry is among the most difficult of the challenges that clergy face.

The purpose of the Lewis S. Garnsworthy Memorial Trust is to help the men and women of the clergy in the Diocese of Toronto to meet that challenge.

"Ours is a faith of Word and Sacrament — not just the one, but the two in balance. Anglicans may often fail as preachers, but it is difficult to be an Anglican priest and not be a pastor."

-- Lewis S. Garnsworthy

The trust provides bursaries to assist clergy from the diocese to take courses such as those offered at the College of Preachers in Washington, D.C. — a program of courses that Lewis Garnsworthy took and valued highly.

The Trust will also provide funds to support preaching and pastoral care workshops to be held in the diocese from time to time -- the kinds of workshops that, during his lifetime, Lewis Garnsworthy encouraged and supported.

The Anglican Foundation of Canada acts as the trustee. Policy decisions will be made on the recommendation of a five-person advisory committee appointed by the Anglican Foundation's board. The Chairperson is the Bishop of Toronto (or his/her designate). Two of the members will be nominated by the executive committee of the Diocese of Toronto, and two by the Toronto Diocesan Anglican Church Women.

This trust needs financial support in order that sufficient funding may be available in future years. Visit the membership page to find out how to support this work.
