AFC Bursaries

Meet Some 2024  Bursary Recipients

The Anglican Foundation of Canada (AFC) understands that in today’s rapidly changing world, church leaders must embrace change, inspire others, and foster collaboration—all while remaining authentic and reflective in their ministry. As the church evolves, AFC is committed to supporting leaders who are not only navigating change but also shaping a future of dynamic, transformational ministry.

Thanks to the generosity of Canadian Anglicans, AFC awarded more than $56,000 in 2024 bursaries for theological education to 25 students across various programs. Here are a few of our 2024 bursary recipients:

Sarah Lehman
Diocese of New Westminster

“My understanding of ministry comes from the priesthood of all believers, as expressed in 1 Peter 2:9: ‘You are royal priests… to show others the goodness of God.’ Ordained ministry is intertwined with the call of all Christians to live out God’s goodness. For years, when I asked God, ‘What do you want of me?’ the answer has always been ‘All of you.’ I am pursuing the priesthood to serve, inspire, and transform.

A key part of my formation was at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco, where we embraced the priesthood of all believers. I hope to bring this inclusive approach to ministry in the Anglican Church of Canada.

With 25 years of nonprofit leadership experience, I also bring skills in fundraising, finance, and strategic planning, which will be crucial as the church adapts to new challenges. I am committed to translating the Church’s rich traditions into vibrant ministry today.

Thank you to AFC for your support, which has been instrumental in my formation and ministry journey.”

Tianna Gocan
Diocese of Huron

“I am in my final year of the Master of Divinity program at Huron University College in London, Ontario. My journey began in 2021 when I started as a special student. I excelled in my studies, earning the St. John’s-By-The-Lake Award in Youth Ministry. Inspired to pursue ordained ministry, I became a full-time MDiv student, as it is required for ordination in the Diocese of Huron.

My academic efforts have been recognized with several awards, including the Fisher-Jenkins Scholarship for highest standing and the Archdeacon Abraham Prize in Homiletics.

As a young Black, first-generation Canadian woman, I am committed to pursuing justice through the Gospel. I aim to inspire other young women of color to see themselves as future deacons and priests in the Anglican Church of Canada.

Thank you to AFC for your generous support throughout my studies.”

Shadi Masahi
Diocese of Niagara

“I am in my second year of the Master of Divinity program at Trinity College in Toronto. This program is crucial for my vocational journey, and I am excited to serve as a priest in the Diocese of Niagara upon completion. My goal is to finish the MDiv and continue my studies with a PhD in theology.

I am passionate about engaging with the church’s theological, pastoral, and liturgical needs. This program is preparing me to serve meaningfully and to foster spiritual growth within the Diocese of Niagara.

Thank you to AFC for your continued support in my journey.”
