AFC Board Approves $148,500 in Grants, Including Important Food Security Initiatives
The Anglican Foundation of Canada (AFC) Board of Directors met by ZOOM on Thursday, February 27, 2025, and approved $148,500 in funding for 11 applicants, including several innovative initiatives that advanced AFC’s commitment to food security through the Community Ministries Fund.

“This grant cycle reflected our ongoing commitment to nurturing communities across Canada,” said Dr. Scott Brubacher, Executive Director of AFC. “We were particularly excited about projects that addressed food insecurity, ensuring that our most vulnerable neighbours have access to nourishing meals and safe spaces.”
Among the most recent grant awards–categories A, B, and C!–were three standout projects dedicated to food security:
St. Saviour’s Pro-Cathedral, Nelson, BC (Diocese of Kootenay), Three-Year Sunday Dinner Service: $50,000 (Category C)
At St. Saviour’s Pro-Cathedral, a three-year initiative will provide a weekly Sunday dinner for approximately 40 guests. The comprehensive project will include vital kitchen upgrades and the purchase of new cookware, as well as modest honoraria for volunteers with lived experience of homelessness.
“Led by an active community advocate, the project not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also promotes dignity and community empowerment.” (AFC Grants Committee)
St. Thomas Anglican Church, Winnipeg, MB (Diocese of Rupert’s Land), Kreative Take-out Meal Program: $8,000 (Category B)
St. Thomas Anglican Church’s Kreative Take-out Meal Program serves approximately 115 families by delivering an impressive 300–350 meals weekly.
“Building on previous AFC grants of $5,000 in 2021 and $10,000 in 2023, this program will continue to be a star example of impactful, community-led outreach.” (AFC Grants Committee)
St. Matthew’s Cathedral, Timmins, ON (Diocese of Moosonee), Friday Lunch Ministry: $5,000 (Category A)
At St. Matthew’s Cathedral, the Friday Lunch Ministry—launched in the summer of 2021—provides 60 lunches every week, offering a warm and welcoming space for individuals in need to gather and receive nourishment.
“This modest investment will be vital in supporting a program that fosters both physical sustenance and community connection.” (AFC Grants Committee)
Taken together, these grants underscore the power and potential for AFC’s Community Ministries Fund to support local churches in addressing food insecurity and creating safe spaces for community engagement.
