The Rev. James Pratt

Incumbent, St. Philip’s Anglican Church, Montreal-West
Montreal, Quebec
Diocese of Montreal

I first heard about the Anglican Foundation when I was in Western Newfoundland; all parishes were required to be members of the Foundation. Then, at General Synod 2004, I met Canon John Erb, who explained just what the Foundation did. When I came to Montreal in 2009, I took over a parish which had significant capital needs. I immediately thought of the Anglican Foundation as a funding source. We applied and were offered a loan. The fact that an arm of the Anglican Church of Canada was offering us money, even as a loan, was a catalyst for fundraising within the parish, and we raised enough that we did not need the loan. Since that initial application, we have submitted two other building projects to the Foundation and received two grants and one loan. In both cases, the funding from the Foundation was a small part of the total budget, but it gave parishioners a sense that they were not alone in supporting our building and presence in the community.
