Bishop Henry Hill translated his gift for spiritual friendship into the St. Basil the Great Scholarship. Scholarship recipients meet other Christians at the fundamental level of friendship in Christ. My time with the Syriac Orthodox Christians in Kerala, India, opened to me the distinctive ways in which life in Christ is lived by people whose faith grows out of Eastern Christian roots. I discovered too how their theological and liturgical tradition could be lived in a clearly Indian way. Today when I teach, I invariably draw on that experience to give a fuller picture of Christian life. What’s more, I continue to enjoy personal friendships with some of those I met during my time in Kerala, along with a love for that part of the world.
