The Anglican Foundation enables the Deanery of Saint Francis in the Diocese of Quebec to run summer camps for the children of recent Syrian refugees. The local Syriac Orthodox community in partnership with the Roman Catholic Diocese and the Anglican Deanery helped relocate over three hundred refugees to the area. Most of these are families with young children. Unwilling to just provide the original $60,000 to help bring these families to the area, the Deanery discerned that we should continue our relationship with frequent meetings, attending one another’s Eucharists, and hosting Christmas parties and community meals. The primary sign of our continued relationship is the annual two-week summer camp that the Deanery has provided for these children over the last four years. We have moved to a mixed model for the camp, with local and refugee children attending together, to help integration into Canadian culture with an emphasis on friendship and cultural diversity as the foundation.
