The Board of Directors of the Anglican Foundation of Canada (AFC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Scott Brubacher to the position of Executive Director beginning October 18, 2021. Dr. Brubacher will succeed the Rev. Canon Dr. Judy Rois who retires on October 15, 2021.
The third time proved to be a charm on Saturday, September 18, as parishioners at St. John-in-the Wilderness, Bright’s Grove, dedicated their Wilderness Pollinator Garden and Beehives project, completed in summer 2020. The morning celebration, twice thwarted by COVID-19 lockdowns, “finally aligned,” says Peter Langille, warden, and was met by feelings of “relief and reward.”
In a certain churchyard in the Diocese of New Westminster, there stands an extremely busy hall that—according to structural engineers—must be liberated from three layers of deteriorating shingles before it can hope to keep the community who depends on it comfortable and dry. “Our hope is that this year we won’t have to have buckets catching rainwater during our Christmas Day meal.”
After 27 years as ecumenical Chaplain to the University of Lethbridge (UofL) and Lethbridge College, the Rev. Canon Erin Phillips has built a lot of bridges: between two campuses, between churches—Anglican, Lutheran, United, and Presbyterian—and between community volunteers and students.
They are three simple words—“Describe your project”—but they can be anxiety-inducing for anyone tasked with submitting a grant application. Dr. Scott Brubacher, the Anglican Foundation of Canada’s Executive Administrator, says he understands the tension well. “I have been on the applicant’s side of the process many times and have experienced the same nervousness myself. At AFC we love to say Yes! and work hard to help every eligible applicant be successful.”
Our Great Canadian Road Trip is progressing very well! What a wonderful opportunity it is to be able to spend the summer visiting some of our 2020 grant recipients and learning more about their creative and compassionate initiatives.
Can happiness and homework really go hand-in-hand? According to The Rev. J. Wesley Denyer, they truly can.“The kids love coming here,” says Denyer. “The look of joy you see on their faces is a huge reward.” The same is true for the club’s volunteers, many of them retirees drawn from the three Toronto churches that have helped to ensure the success of the program for more than ten years.

Earlier this summer, we caught up with Arden Denyer-Willis, age 10, who made her broadcasting debut as narrator of the 10th and final episode of the Anglican Foundation of Canada’s Foundation Forward podcast. The extended season finale was based on Judy Rois’ 3rd children’s book Generous People are Everywhere.
